The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the right to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
